Homeward Trails’ Tails Out Program Prepares Dogs for Adoption

An accomplished business owner in Fairfax, Virginia, William Schuiling has owned and operated Brown Automotive Group, LTD, since 1970. In addition to leading the largest privately owned automotive company in the Mid-Atlantic region, William E. Schuiling is an active philanthropist who has made significant donations to animal welfare organizations such as Homeward Trails Animal Rescue.

Located in Arlington, Virginia, Homeward Trails cares for owner-surrendered pets and animals rescued from under-resourced shelters. In addition to facilitating adoptions, the organization operates the Tails Out! program, which invites individuals to take animals out of the shelter for a few hours while they are waiting to be placed for adoption. Depending on a rescue dog’s background, they can need some time to adjust before being placed with a family.

Tails Out! provides the opportunity for animals to leave the shelter for just a few hours, slowly accustoming themselves to people and other pets. Tails Out! volunteers often take dogs on hikes or other outings, providing essential exercise and socialization that will help prepare them for permanent placement. Tails Out! accepts new volunteer applications on an as-needed basis.
