Baltimore Animal Rescue Takes Humane Approach to Cat Control

The owner and chairman of Brown Automotive Group, William E. Schuiling has managed a network of car dealerships for more than 45 years. An active philanthropist in his community, William Schuiling has donated $25,000 to the Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter (BARCS) through his business.

Since 2012, BARCS has played a role in reducing the number of stray cats in the Baltimore area and caring for the remaining ones in its Community Cats project. Community Cats operates on the simple trap, neuter, return (TNR) principle. Sterilizing street cats is a humane way to reduce their population.

Releasing the sterilized cats, which are accustomed to living outdoors and hunting for food, allows the shelter to keep indoor space available for indoor cats or cats that need medical care. These practices help the shelter avoid euthanasia due to overpopulation and contribute to community rodent control with healthy feral cats returning to their natural surroundings.
