Community Food Pantry Reaches out to Serve Michiganders in Need

William E. Schuiling has served as the head of the Brown Automotive Group, Ltd., since 1970. William Schuiling is also a generous donor to numerous local causes in his native home of Michigan and beyond. In 2018, the Community Food Pantry in Charlevoix, Michigan, thanked him for a $10,000 contribution as part of his long-standing support of its mission.

The food pantry’s letter of thanks outlined the many ways in which a contribution like this changes lives for the better. Established in 1983, the pantry continues to use supporters’ gifts of time, money, and supplies to provide assistance (including food, personal care items, and more) to about 150 homes. Many of the pantry’s clients are families with young children, seniors, and multi-generational households.

Experts note that an estimated 40 million Americans struggle with hunger. That’s about one-eighth of the entire population. Every county in the country, in fact, is home to people who don’t always know where their next meals will come from. And, for many of the nation’s people, SNAP benefits don’t provide enough to cover these basic needs. The result is families in crisis, and undernourished children who have a harder time learning in school.

Statistics on hunger in Michigan parallel those in the rest of the country, and the need is even starker in the most under-resourced communities. But thanks to generous donors, local food pantries like the one in Charlevoix continue to work to meet this challenge.
