Susan G. Komen Calls for Better Access to Breast Cancer Services

William E. Schuiling is the owner of Brown Automotive Group, LTD, which is the largest privately owned vehicle dealership company in the Mid-Atlantic region. Through Brown’s, William Schuiling provides support to a number of charitable organizations, including Susan G. Komen, which funds breast cancer research and services.

Susan G. Komen also plays an important role in influencing legislation to benefit people with breast cancer and their families. In early March, the organization met with some 350 lawmakers in Washington, DC, to encourage policies that would make breast health services more accessible and remove barriers to treatment created by insurance providers. In addition, the organization lobbied to increase federal investment in biomedical research related to breast cancer.

Some of the specific initiatives addressed by the delegation included the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program, which covers the costs of screening for low-income women and those without insurance, and the Cancer Drug Parity Act, which would remove limits to oral cancer drugs that involve higher cost-sharing practices than intravenous drugs.
