Susan G. Komen - Be Aware of These Breast Cancer Risk Factors

Brown Automotive Group owner William E. Schuiling owns an array of dealerships in the Greater Fairfax, Virginia, area and beyond. Philanthropy is of key importance to William Schuiling, who supports leading charitable organizations, including Susan G. Komen.

One of the best-known names in the fight against breast cancer, Susan G. Komen was established as the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation in 1982. Since then, it has provided more than $920 million for cancer research and funded $2 billion in medical care to patients with breast cancer.

As early detection is key to positive outcomes in breast cancer care, the Susan G. Komen organization encourages women to learn about risk factors for breast cancer. Although some risk factors like age, ethnicity, and family history are outside of patients’ control, others, including the following, can be managed:

-Gaining weight, especially after menopause, can increase risks.
-Alcohol consumption on a regular basis correlates with increased risk.
-Use of oral contraceptives can increase risk during and shortly after use.
